Canon makes great cameras in the dollar price range. I would recommend getting one with a lithium battery though. IMO Cameras that take AA batteries just eat through batteries and if you have a cell phone then you know how to charge a lithium battery already and its much cheaper than buying AA batteries all the time! Also, buy online like from Amazon or newegg.com. They have way better prices. Plus no sales tax and usually no shipping or very cheap.
